TELL A FRIENDAs an omotor or visitor to our website, do you like and believe in what EMOTORURHOBO stand for? If you do, please, e-mail and forward this page to another omotor or friend who you know need to hear about the message for change and progress. For those who may not know, there is a need to provide the meaning of a few Urhobo words. Omo means child; Omotor means child of the land/soil; Emo means children and Emotor means children of the land/soil. Emotor, that is, children of the land, are stakeholders of the land that is part of their heritage. Like God directed Abraham and the children if Isreal to settle in the land and be blessed. Our God is good and benevolent. As a result, all lands on earth is blessed by Him; and He directed His children to settle where they choose and be blessed there from. The same was and still is true for Urhobo people and their land. Urhoboland is blessed, fertile and rich in petroleum and natural gas reserves. It was blessed with many river tributaries from the River Niger and Atlantic Ocean as a source of fisheries. The fertile land was favorable to the cultivation of the palm tree, cassava, rubber and ----- before the pollution and degradation of the eco-system brought on by oil exploration and gas flaring. Virtually Urhobo communities had cottage industries that derived their raw materials from by products of palm, cassava and rubber. These products sustained the local economy as well as formed a substantial of Nigeria’s foreign trade before the massive disruption occasioned by oil exploration. As a result, Urhobo land is gradually loosing their blessings through a combination of external and internal factors that can and should be changed. More and more Urhobo people and friends are no longer willing to accept the status quo. They are no longer willing to accept representation and leadership that is not accountable. This anger has given birth to the political activism now known as Urhobo Stakeholders For Change and Progress (USFCAP). Members have committed themselves and resources to working for change and progress. The vision that led to the founding of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) some 78 years ago, that “the unity and solidarity of all Urhobo rest on a strong unifying body”. Members believe and are committed to membership in UPU and Urhobo umbrella organizations in their host countries around the world. Thank you and visit us at www.urhobonation.org |
